My novel ‘Melanie Alone’ has won a prize with a small press and the prize is publication.

At long last.

It will come out in July, nine months from now. Like being pregnant.

I take champagne to Paolo and Nathan’s back in my old village. On arrival at their sumptuous manor, I find CJ (Conservative Jeremy) there. Paolo calls him that since I confided in them. CJ is painting Nathan’s portrait. So he gets a kiss as well.

CJ won’t stay for the champagne because he has a model arriving for a two-hour sitting. I say, come back to us after. He says he’ll see how he feels. He slopes off.

‘Do you think he’ll come back?’

‘He’s probably shagging his model, Suki.’

‘I honestly don’t think he shags every model.’

‘He was a bastard to you. Here’s your champagne, well done darling.’

‘We should save some for him just in case.’

‘Stop it!’
